Escape to Death Valley

There is something very calm and spiritual about the desert. There is a peace that I feel there that I don't get anywhere else. This especially rang true on the sand dunes in Death Valley where we ended up for a long weekend camping trip to escape the coldness of Utah.

It worked out perfect as we drove through snow flurries all through northern and central Utah on Friday afternoon. After a sleep-over with Ashely and Jared in Las Vegas, we pulled into the Stovepipe Wells Campground in Death Valley National Park on Saturday with temperatures in the seventies. This made for excellent hiking whether for the next three days as we explored the different canyons and landscape that make this seemingly desolate place so beautiful.

As you can tell by the pictures posted, the highlight for us was the Dunes but we also hiked four different canyons, all of which were surprisingly different, each having a unique look and feel. One even had a spring-fed waterfall which flows year round.

Lizards are our most common and frequent companions on our trips to the desert. We are always trying to capture them in our photos along the way. We got a great picture of this guy (the biggest one we've seen to date). He was getting some sun on a rock and ran back into his hole when we walked by, but after a moment he poked his head out and then came out for a picture.

All in all a fantastic little road trip to California. But we are back in the cold and already wanting to head south again.

I miss the desert. My eyes are burning from the dust in the air here in Nicaragua as we enter the height of summer. Looking at the desert, with my eyes burning, makes me feel like I´m there. We miss you guys and sometimes talk about how much fun you would be to have down here for a week or so. How you would enjoy the little things that people who have been here too long forget to laugh at. Not us. We laugh plenty. We have big lizards here too. They are called anything from "iguana" to "lunch." Glad to see someone escaping the snow though, rather than just accepting it. Letting it rule. We try not to let the rain boss us, but sometimes it does.
